Manokwari,(Antaranews West Papua)-The government has planned to build a new airport in the popular tourist destination of Raja Ampat in West Papua to improve its accessibility.

West Papua Governor Dominggus Mandacan said here on Wednesday that the new airport would be built in Missol area, and the local administration has started to prepare the land for the project.

Mandacan disclosed his meeting with the transportation minister and district heads in Jakarta last week to discuss development plan of airports in Raja Ampat, Manokwari, Fakfak, and South Manokwari.

"Regarding Raja Ampat, it would be difficult to expand Marinda airport in Waisai. It would need a huge fund, because we cannot cut the mountain near Marinda airport," he noted.

Despite the planned project, Marinda airport would still serve narrow-bodied aircraft, while the wide-bodied ones would be directed to Missol.

The governor remarked that the new airport is expected to boost tourism sector in the region.

"In the future, we hope there will be direct flights from Jakarta, Manado, Bali, or Batam to Raja Ampat. A better access (to the tourist destination) would attract more tourists," he continued.

According to Mandacan, the Transportation Ministry would send a team to study the project feasibility and other issues on flight safety.

"We have discussed a lot of issues with the transportation minister. We will build transportation infrastructure in West Papua, and so far, the coordination between central and local governments have run smoothly," he pointed out.(*)
