Manokwari (ANTARA) -The community of Teluk Wondama Regency, West Papua, has many unique traditions in protecting or preserving nature.

Just like in Kampung Sumbokoro Windesi District. The people of this village have a sawora tradition, which is a local wisdom of the community that closes the fish search activities and all the seafood for a certain period of time.

The culture of Sawora or in other areas of West Papua called sasi is an indigenous effort to keep from over-exploitation of marine resources. Sawora in Sumbokoro lasted for two years.

"It means that once every two years a new harvest mass is opened," said Ben G Saroy, Head of Cendrawasih Bay National Park.

Sumbokoro, is one of the target villages under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment. In addition to maintaining the sustainability of buffer zones in the National Park, it is done to support the development of tourism in the region.

The closing of activities has been closed since several months ago. The community is waiting for the opening and usually the opening of sawora will be done through custom procession.

"At the opening of sawora we will invite all parties and we will also announce that the tourists from outside and within the country also come to see directly this tradition," said Ben.

At harvest time, various types of fish and sea catchments will be auctioned. Of course this momentum will be a harvest party of seafood for local residents.

As stated by Ben, the sawora tradition is not only owned by Sumbokoro residents. Another location that also has a similar local wisdom is Napanyaur village.

Unfortunately, the tradition has not done well in the village. The National Park Office will push it to become a new cultural destination other than Sumbokoro.

Beside sawora, there are also locations that are settled into the location of sawora or eternal sasi. There should be no fishing activity at all.

This is done in the area or core zone where fishes are spawning. The protection is important because this location is the main buffer of ecology and the population of marine animals in the national park including the areas of West Papua and Papua Province.

"Sawora in Sumbokoro has been going on for about a year, we will wait for another year to enjoy the harvest," he said.

Wondama Bay Regent Bernadus A Imburi and his deputy Paul Y Indubri are eager to develop tourism as a leading sector in the area.

It seems, the intention is not something excessive, in fact that this area holds a lot of potential. Tourism objects can be developed in all districts, because, each region has potential and quite diverse.

In addition to having a maritime wealth, this area is also quite famous to have a unique culture and local wisdom. Historical and religious tours can be developed in this area.

Now the Wondama Bay government is "binding belly". Budget savings are made to reduce debt in order to increase spending capabilities.

A number of infrastructure developments were boosted by 2018. From the bridge to the harbor dock.

The local government is intensively coordinating with PT Telkomsel and PLN (Persero). The Bupati wants all villages in Teluk Wondama to be powered and accessible by cellular network. (***)
